Never underestimate the importance of a firm, rigid support for your monitors.
A speaker stand needs to be rigid and to be able to support the speaker so that it cannot move or vibrate when being used. When the bass cone of a speaker moves forward it will try to push the cabinet backwards, and if this is allowed to happen, the transients will become smeared and the sound less distinct.

Mike Oldfield Doubles Up
