Quested recently visited to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), They have been using Quested speakers in their studio for many years.
During the visit, we were welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Zhou Xiaodong, Head of Audio Arts & Sciences, who introduced the Conservatory's recording facilities and shared how the studios continue to support teaching, music production and research within the Audio Arts & Sciences programme.
For Quested, this was more than a studio visit. It was an opportunity to revisit a project that began many years ago, when the recording facilities were first commissioned.
A Long-standing Relationship
When the recording studios were originally built, Roger Quested travelled to Singapore to oversee the installation and calibration of the monitoring system.As with many Quested studio projects, the work extended well beyond installing loudspeakers. System positioning, room integration and final calibration were all carried out to ensure that the monitoring accurately reflected the acoustic environment of the control room.
The objective was straightforward: to provide engineers, lecturers and students with a monitoring system they could rely on for critical listening. Many years later, those monitors remain in daily use.
Supporting Audio Education
The recording studios at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music play an important role in the Conservatory's Audio Arts & Sciences programme.
Students use the facilities throughout their studies for recording, editing, mixing and production, while the studios also support concert recordings, ensemble sessions, composition projects and academic research.
During our visit, Assoc. Prof. Zhou Xiaodong spoke about the continued development of the programme and the importance of providing students with an accurate monitoring environment throughout their education.
Reliable monitoring allows students to develop critical listening skills while giving staff confidence that decisions made in the control room translate consistently beyond the studio.
Still Doing the Job It Was Built For
Technology has changed considerably since the studios were first commissioned.Recording workflows have evolved, software platforms have advanced and production methods continue to develop.
What has not changed is the role of the monitoring system.
Walking back into the control room, it was clear that the Quested system continues to perform the same task it was originally installed to do: providing an accurate and dependable reference for recording and production.
For Quested, longevity has always been an important part of professional monitoring. Studios invest in systems that become part of their daily workflow, often for many years. Consistency, reliability and long-term performance remain just as important as technical specification.
Looking Back
Returning to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory offered an opportunity to see how a professional monitoring system continues to support education long after its installation.It was also a chance to reconnect with colleagues, revisit a familiar control room and see another generation of students working in the same environment.Professional studios inevitably evolve over time, but some things remain constant.Accurate monitoring is one of them.
